Are Women the future of online gambling?
Before the advent of online gambling most bets were placed in shady looking betting shops that never saw a female punter with the possible exception of Grand National Day. Female gambling was more or less restricted to the Bingo parlour.
Betting shops have improved their image in recent years becoming much brighter places and using female staff but it is still a male dominated environment and Casinos have been given glitz and an aura of wealth and respectability but still few woman enter these establishments unaccompanied; but what about online? Online gaming is without doubt a less threatening and much more female friendly environment but it is estimated that in the UK women still only represent around 5% of sports betting and a similar percentage of Poker players. In Casino games such as slots the percentage can be higher. This clearly therefore represents an opportunity for whoever can capture the business.
Ladbrokes have sponsored the European Ladies Championship of Poker in recent years and report a large increase in female poker players on their site helped no doubt also by the presence and success of ladies playing poker on the television.
Some of the advertising linking success at Poker with sexual prowess will have to change and some companies are bringing in people to specifically target the female player. At Betsson AB, the owner of Casino Euro at least three senior executives are female so things are moving in the right direction.
Welcome to the fun ladies.
