Onlinecasino.ie is sad to report in this edition of our casino news feature, the premature death of one of the lesser known casino founders in America. Don H Barden died in Detroit on Thursday, at the age of 67, after a classic American rags to riches life story particularly notable in terms of casino news, when he became the first black American owner of a Las Vegas casino when he purchased Fitzgeralds in 2001. Mr. Barden was born one of thirteen children in 1943 in Inkster, a mainly black suburb of Detroit and home of the American auto industry where his father and an older brother worked. He went to the Central State University in Ohio, but dropped out when he could no longer afford to continue his studies. His business career started at the age of 21 when he opened a record store in Ohio which he promoted with the help of the Jackson Five and James Brown. He went on to establish Barden Cablevision and won the contract to install cable television in Detroit, his home town. He sold Barden Cablevision in 1994 for more than $100 million and then used the proceeds to open the Majestic Star, a riverboat casino, in Gary, Indiana. Majestic Star Casinos operated casinos in Indiana, Colorado, Mississippi and Nevada, but filed for bankruptcy protection in 2009. Although Barden Industries was last year quoted as being the 10th highest grossing black owned company in the US, Mr. Barden never forgot his roots and was well known for his considerable charity work in his local community. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time.
