Our regular online casino news bulletins often include reference to the successful introduction of Bingo as an online casino game, proving that despite the demise of many of our local Bingo halls the game itself remains as popular as ever. The Rank Group, who currently operate 97 Bingo clubs have just made an interesting commitment to the UK Treasury as part of their discussions regarding changes to regulations in the gaming industry, which clearly shows that they believe the game of Bingo can be revived away from the online casino format. Ian Burke, the Rank chief executive has reported that the Mecca estate which is owned by Rank has now fallen from 122 Bingo clubs at its peak to the current 97, and at least 10 of these are struggling to make a profit. However he is now apparently prepared to commit the company to opening new Mecca Bingo clubs in return for a reduction in duty from 20% to 15%. In contrast to the Treasury’s view that cutting duty would reduce tax receipts, Ian Burke claims that renewed investment and bigger prizes would actually increase revenues from Bingo clubs by as much as £35 million over the next four years. He also points out that opening new Bingo clubs for the first time for many years would create new jobs and boost local economies. There is no doubt that Bingo clubs are currently at a disadvantage compared to their online casino and mobile Bingo rivals in terms of betting and gaming taxes in the UK, and of course they were severely affected by the smoking ban when it was introduced. Clearly being able to play casino games including Bingo from the comfort of your own home does have significant appeal, but there are also many people who miss the convivial atmosphere of the local Bingo club where an evening with friends was the highlight of the week. Perhaps this suggestion will lead to a revival of playing Bingo in the company of like minded friends.
