Shortly after online casinos were first introduced and as a result of some critical comments from many existing casino games players, we saw the start of the live online casino option. All online casinos use Random Number Generators or RNG’s to determine the winning numbers for many of their casino games and when playing most of them we would hardly notice let alone consider it a problem. However when online casinos first started to become widely available their first customers were more than likely to be people who already had experience of playing casino games at a real casino, so when these experienced players saw the effects of using RNG’s to determine the winning number in a game of roulette at an online casino they were far from impressed. The problem was that the computer graphics illustrating the movement of the ball on the roulette wheel simply could not make the behaviour of the ball look natural or realistic. We need to remember that playing casino games at an online casino was a new experience and clearly this irregular movement led to conspiracy theories and lack of trust in the minds of some potential players. To their credit each of the major online casinos quickly started to introduce their own versions of the live online casino option we see today. The concept was that using real dealers and a real roulette wheel would remove any suspicion in the minds of those casino games players who did not trust the RNG’s. To achieve this almost all the online casinos chose to set up a studio where the casino games could be managed by real dealers, and the games would then be streamed live via webcams through their online casino site to our computer screens. In the early days before broadband became widely available the quality of the streaming often left a lot to be desired, but the live online casino option gradually became an established option and the preferred choice for more and more people. As the technology has been developed, most online casinos with a live online casino option now also offer the opportunity to chat with the dealers whilst you’re playing the casino games. The idea is that this is another step closer to reciprocating the experience of playing casino games at a real casino, and to a certain extent it does for those who enjoy this sort of interaction. It is probably true that most current online casino games players may never have actually played casino games in a real casino, but for those of us who have we must accept that it would be almost impossible to totally recreate the atmosphere of excitement and tension we experience by playing these games in a real casino in the company of lots of other players. Nevertheless the live online casino option is a compromise that is proving popular with many players. At this stage we should point out that there are now a few small specialist online casinos that have taken the concept of the live online casino to the next level by actually streaming a selection of casino games from a real casino, but we will come back to that later.
For obvious reasons the online casino operators do of course face additional costs in operating a casino games studio with real dealers, and many have therefore increased the minimum table stakes for their casino games played in the live casino mode. The lowest minimum stake we have found is at William Hill casino, where roulette can be played for as little as 0.10 euros but most now operate a minimum of 1.00 euro or more. This clearly does not suit every online casino games player, but it is an obvious consequence of setting up a live online casino facility. It is also worth pointing out that most online casinos also limit their live online casino option to just two or three games, usually roulette, blackjack and baccarat. There are exceptions, with both William Hill and BetFred for example offering a game called casino hold’em, a form of Caribbean Stud, and Ladbrokes and Bet365 both including Sic Bo in their range of live casino games. The only other difference between what the major online casinos are offering in terms of their live online casino facility is whether the option depends on the games being downloaded or not. BetFred, Ladbrokes and Paddy Power all offer casino games in the live online casino mode without the need to download, whereas William Hill, 888 and Bet365 only offer the live online casino option as a download. There is one other feature of playing casino games in the live online casino mode which we should mention, and it is particularly relevant to playing roulette. When the games is being run by a dealer in a remote studio there is clearly a time limit on how long a player has to place their bets. This is true of course in a real casino, but in that situation the dealer can at least see what is happening on the table. Some players who have not experienced a real casino may find that they feel rushed when playing in the live casino mode.
As we have mentioned before some of the smaller specialist online casinos which have joined the online casino sector in the last couple of years have introduced a new version of the live online casino concept by actually streaming selected casino games as they are being played in a real casino. The first to do this was the All Irish casino which streams roulette, blackjack and baccarat live from the Portomaso casino on the island of Malta. Clearly this means that the games are being run by professional dealers who know exactly what they are doing, and if we’re honest it’s difficult to imagine a better way to get the atmosphere of a real casino than actually film live from a real casino. The only downside is that the option is only available during the opening hours of the casino, but as this is 10.00am till 5.00am it is unlikely to inconvenience too many potential players.
