Casino Dealers take on the Casino over Tips
It is a well accepted custom that winners in a casino give tips to the dealers in the assumption that this will enhance their sometimes meagre wages and of course the gambler hopes that this generosity will result in more winnings. The dealer in truth of course has no control over the wheel spins or the cards dealt. In the Casino and Hotel group Wynn Las Vegas dealers are taking the company to court over distribution of these tips which they claim is both unfair and in violation of labour laws. The resort introduced a tip pooling system in 2006 and at that time a lawsuit was filed in the district court but the Nevada Supreme Court ruled that the issue should be referred to the labour commissioner; the case is still pending. Now another suit has been filed stating that by forcing dealers to share tips with Supervisors they are effectively paying the dealers nothing. Lawyers for the claimant say management takes 15 to 20% of the pooled tips.
