Over recent months here at onlinecasino.ie we have found that whenever we look at the online casino news it has primarily concerned the fortune of one of our biggest online casino operator, Ladbrokes. The Ladbrokes online casino and online sports gambling site is of course one of the most supported in Ireland because of their large high street presence and the brand awareness that having betting shops in almost every town and city provides. Unfortunately we are now very aware that their chain of 196 betting shops in Ireland has been struggling to make a profit and is the subject of a proposed restructuring plan which would entail disposing of at least 60 of those shops. The process of doing this under a chapter 11 system was well underway and an examiner had been appointed by the High court to oversee the arrangement, but apparently there had been a last minute attempt by Boylesports, another Irish bookmaker to acquire the shops in question. The examiner has however now decided that he prefers the original Ladbrokes proposals and has effectively blocked Boylesports’ approach. The fate of this tranche of betting shops of course represents only part of the proposed turnaround plans of new chief executive Jim Mullen, who was due to present his business review last Tuesday but then postponed it due to the ongoing negotiations regarding the potential merger with Gala Coral. Clearly Ladbrokes will continue to play a major part in our regular review of the online casino news for many months to come, because it is unlikely that such a merger would escape the attention of the Monopolies Commission and it may be a lengthy process before an acceptable deal is reached.
