The two best known online casino operators in Ireland are Ladbrokes and Paddy Power, primarily because both of these companies have a big presence on the high street with their betting shop estates. Under normal circumstances therefore we would expect one or both of these online casino operators to feature in any Irish casino news report we read. This month it is the turn of Ladbrokes, partly because they have just released their half year results, but also because of their continuing problems in the digital technology area of the business. Ladbrokes’ overall half year results are pretty good on the face of it, with operating profits up 11% to nearly £107 million and turnover up to £529 million, but almost all of this gain was achieved in the retail side of the business based on their slot machines in their betting shops. Their online performance however, which includes both online casino games and online sports betting was less impressive with profits down by nearly 50%. Richard Glynn, the chief executive admitted that they were still having problems with their new sports betting website and that it would not now be up and running in time for the start of the new football season. Richard Ames, the director responsible for the £50 million investment in the new digital technology has now left the board and responsibility for digital operations has been handed to Nick Rust in addition to his current role overseeing the retail side of the business. From the point of view of gamblers who enjoy playing their casino games at Ladbrokes online casino, this latest piece of Irish casino news is probably a little irrelevant given that most of the problems appear to be in the online sports gambling area of the business, but it is in everyone’s interest that our major online casino operators continue to invest successfully in new digital technology whether it is in the sports gambling sector or in new exciting online casino games. We wish them well.
