Contrary to popular belief that it is the kids who spend most time on the internet chatting with their friends through Twitter or Facebook, a recent survey suggests that it is the mothers who spend more time on the Internet than they spend looking after the children. A study of almost 1500 women conducted by online games site Winmonkey discovered that over 80% of them go online during the day with just under 80% saying they spend more time on the internet than doing other household chores such as cleaning and cooking. Just under 20% of respondents said they spend more than five hours per day online with around 40% spending more than 3 hours per day. The most popular were social networking sites and other chat rooms but just under a quarter admitted to spending some of the time on online gambling sites with other popular sites being shopping and news. Even the Television has been put into second place with just under three out of four women saying they spend more time online than watching TV. The founder of the web site Sam Notaro suggested that finding a balance between being online and other activities was important and reiterated the popularity of shopping and gambling websites.
