We have reported recently the spate of robberies from Casinos in Europe and even the Poker Tournament in Germany and we thought that this was a European problem associated with the economy but now there has been another attack but this time in South Africa. Most forms of gambling have been legal in South Africa since laws were changed in 1994 and casinos have been steadily been increasing in number to cater for the estimated 80% of South Africans that gamble regularly. The ones who were present at the Mafikeng casino near Johannesburg recently might have second thoughts next time. Nine robbers armed with automatic weapons stormed the casino, held security staff at gunpoint and made off with an undisclosed amount of cash. The raid was similar in style to those that took place recently in France and Switzerland but unfortunately this time there was a fatality. A local journalist who was in the casino at the time decided to film what was happening on his mobile phone but unfortunately for him the robbers spotted what was going on and promptly shot him dead from close range. This is the first of such robberies of casinos in South Africa but there have been several recently in other parts of the world and people must start wondering whether online casinos as well as being more convenient are also safer.
