Today in our Irish Casino News section we can tell you that plans for a new casino complex at Two-Mile-Borris near Thurles in North Tipperary could be the trigger to modernise outdated Irish gambling laws. The complex for which plans have been approved locally would be a huge undertaking and includes not only a 6000 square metre casino but also a greyhound track and an all weather racecourse which would eventually replace the current course at Thurles. The man behind the project is Mr Richard Quirke who is already known in the gambling world from his involvement with Dr Quirkey’s Good Time Emporium located on O’Connell Street in Dublin and according to him the €450 million or so that the project will cost can be funded by investors and will require no grants or other state assistance. As well as the race courses and the casino the complex will include a 5 star hotel, a golf course and parking for thousands of cars but perhaps the most controversial item will be a replica of the White House which it is anticipated to be used for weddings and other banqueting functions. As far as employment is concerned, the construction should keep anything up to a thousand people busy whilst 1500 permanent posts could be created once up and running. As is the case with any project involving gambling there will some opposition and there may yet be an appeal about the planning permission and for sure our gambling laws will need to be changed which is also no foregone conclusion.
