One of the most reported effects of the expansion of online casinos in Ireland has been the surge in popularity of the casino game of poker. There are of course many different versions of poker, and the online casinos have included many of these different poker formats in their range of casino games, but the overwhelming favourite among serious poker players is Texas Hold’em. However the Texas Hold’em poker format is not necessarily the best version of poker for everyone who would like to play poker online, and almost certainly not for beginners or those on a limited budget. Firstly Texas Hold’em is a poker format with several betting rounds before the final showdown, which often means that the stake required to stay in the game far exceeds the initial ante bet. Secondly, playing poker at an online casino often means playing against other online players who could well be far more experienced than you without you knowing it. Clearly we would all like to be able to play Texas Hold’em poker successfully, but this type of poker format is a casino game in which skill and experience always counts in the long run, so we all need to learn the game before playing seriously. For absolute online poker beginners, a good place to start is Caribbean Stud which is a very simple poker format available at many online casinos and is played against the house. Caribbean Stud poker is an excellent way to learn how poker hands are ranked, because that is all you need to know. Online Caribbean Stud involves the player choosing an initial ante bet and then being dealt five cards face up, with the dealer also having five cards four of which are blind. The player can then choose to raise the bet, but only by an amount equal to the ante bet. The hands are then revealed and a win is paid at even money on the total stake. Most online casinos also stipulate that the dealer must have what they call a qualifying hand, usually Ace or King high before the raised bet is paid out.
