When we look at what effect the introduction of online casinos has had on the gambling scene in Ireland it is difficult to look beyond the dramatic increase in popularity of poker. Yes it is true that the most popular online casino games are undoubtedly the slots, but when it comes to the more traditional casino games poker is clearly the winner and its resurgence is directly attributable to the advent of the online casinos. In common with all the casino games now offered by the online casinos, online poker comes in a variety of formats ranging from the simplest of poker formats Draw Poker to the more complicated community card versions such as Texas Hold’em and Omaha Poker. Nowadays most of the serious poker players tend to concentrate solely on the Texas Hold’em format of the game, which is also the version of poker played in almost all the major poker tournaments around the world. For those of you who have never played the Texas Hold’em version of poker we have detailed the rules and some strategies on our individual casino games pages, but here is a brief summary of how the game is played. Each player is dealt two cards face down, followed by a betting round. Five community cards are then dealt face up in the middle of the table, one at a time with another betting round after each card is dealt. The community cards are available for every player to use in their five card showdown hand and every player must of course use at least three of those cards to make up a five card hand. The ability of each player to select a final hand from seven cards instead of five should in theory increase the chances of better ranked hands in the showdown, and the number of betting rounds associated with Texas Hold’em poker definitely increases the size of the pot. New players should though be a little wary of the Texas Hold’em format of poker, because it could cost them more than they planned simply to stay in the game in some well backed hands because of the number of betting rounds.
