Rumours abound that William Hill the UK Bookmaker may be considering moving offshore after a statement by Chief Executive Ralph Topping. He stated that the company did not have “the luxury of being parochial about our future” and Paul Dixon, President of The Racehorse Owners Association said William Hill was “very serious about moving”. Fears are that if William Hill decides to go, others may follow.
Mr Topping was speaking to the financial world explaining that William Hill is already an international business and not just a UK bookmaker. He went on to explain the challenges being faced in the industry particularly in the UK where the firm has closed 20 shops this year and has many employees on a pay freeze to save jobs. Internet betting is a global market and he believes there are 400 plus English language online betting sites as competition.
He nevertheless sees the business as flexible enough to cope with continuous modernization.
